cars will still be made in USA by foreign automakers and people will still buy cars. But it'll devastate the economy, especially on the local level. The automakers are asking for piddle spit compared to what the financials are getting. And the whole private jet criticism is grandstanding BS, it costs more to fly a bunch of guys last minute business class on a commercial airline than to take a jet that you already have and gas it up. Company policy won't let them fly commercial anyways. And according to Barry Ritholtz, the financial bailout's total cost is more than the cost of WW2 adjusted for inflation. It will also cost more than the total combined costs in today's dollars of the Marshall Plan, the Louisiana Purchase, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the entire historical budget of NASA, including the moon landing. For a tiny fraction of the cost of the bailout, we could have given the world clean drinking water. Think about how that would have improved the US's image. Or had universal healthcare in the US. Or planted wind turbines and solar panels. Nobody can even tell if this bailout (auto or financial) will work. If anyone says they know, I'd like some of their psychic koolaid.
